Ecological consultant to bodies such as Forestry Commission and Game Conservancy. Garden design commissions throughout England and in Italy and US.
1989-1991
Awarded Garden Club of America/English Speaking Union Interchange Fellowship in horticulture and landscape architecture. Based at North Carolina State University.
1991-1994
PhD Long-term Dynamics of herbaceous plant communities Department of Animal and Plant Sciences, University of Sheffield.
1995
Appointed lecturer, Department of Landscape, University of Sheffield.
Research Interests
My academic background and my professional experience are shared equally between a scientific fascination at the way natural systems work at all scales, and a creative eagerness to explore the design potential of those same natural systems, again at all scales. As a result, my research interests are wide and reflect these personal interests, and range from pure ecological studies through to landscape horticulture and planting design.
In general, my research interests lie within three main areas:
Urban Greenspace: structure and function
Urban green networks, greenspace structure and greenways. Sustainable urban planning and greenspace strategies. Currently developing a GIS - model of Sheffields green structure which will enable various theories of the environmental, ecological and social functions of urban green to be tested.
